Manikgad is the
Mountain fortress situated near the Vashivali village which is 27 KM from
Panvel. This fort was built by Sarkhel Kanhoji Angre in 1718 to oversee the
trade route from Pune to Mumbai.
Now there is only
ruins of fort remain, in which a Rock - Cut Cistern is famous which is known as
'Darya take'. There are some other small cistern, one small shivalinga and the
Ganesh Gate is present.
This fort is
situated at height of 1878 feet above sea Level and very well known for
trekking and hiking site. The base village is Vashivali from there Manikgad is
around. From base village it’s around 4 km and take 2 to 3 hrs.
There are two ways
to reach at top one is from straight in which path is inclined around 60°
and passes through rock cutting. This is the shortest path but it’s suggested
to avoid in rainy season because there are loose rocks are available and all
are slippery, so there is chances for accident. Another path is in spiral way
its take more distance and time but it’s safe. It's very hard to choose right
path without local guide.
How to reach
As this fort is far from highway so it’s
better to go through own vehicle. If you wanted to go through public transport
it you need to come at Panvel railway station from there you can hire any auto
but it will take high cost and consume more time. From Panvel to Vashivillage it’s
difficult to find public vehicle.
